Rain Shadow Kayakers Columbia River Paddle Cecil and Peggy organizers April 14 - 16, 2009
|
The Rain Shadow Kayakers stayed at the Skamokawa Center in Skamokawa, Washington. The center is located in a
beautiful spot along the Columbia River, close enough to the Pacific Ocean to see and feel the effect of the tides. This is
the same center used by Elder Hostel for its trips on the Columbia River.
A total of twelve people
participated in the paddles
although five participants
missed one day of the
paddles.

gets top billing on my web
site.
The paddles took place on sloughs and the Columbia River.
There was some fog the first morning, but it disappeared within minutes of our launch. The weather cooperated the next
three days. There was no rain, and wind was moderate for the Columbia River.
The spring bird migration had begun, so we had a spectacular display of migrating Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes.
We saw Great Blue Heron,
hawks, osprey, and much
much more.
We
encountered
a number of
raccoons
feasting on
shell fish
and other
foods.
There were lots of pilings along the sloughs and river from the days when canneries and fishing wharves abounded along
the Columbia River. These days grasses, plants, and even trees have taken hold on the pilings.
