The Barren Lands
They call it the Barren Lands, but it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Next to the Antarctic, it is the largest
wilderness area left in the world. We did our last four days of paddling on the Thelon River. On our next to last night on
the river, three canoes came by. Our guide's body stiffened at the intrusion of these people. Not a word passed
between our two groups--both groups equally distressed at sharing the river for a few minutes with someone else.
In some of the rockiest and barest
places, one found beautiful flowers
blooming.
Arctic Sunsets are spectacular as those who have seen the pictures of our first Arctic trip know.
You will recall the picture of the mosquitoes in the vestibule taken as we went to bed on our last night. Later a front blew
through and the mosquitoes disappeared. At 11:30 p.m., I awoke to this view out the tent. The mosquitoes had been
replaced by this spectacular view.
