Other Wildlife
Alex devised an ingenious bear
alarm--a rope from the garbage bag to
an air horn. In his thirty plus years of
guiding Arctic canoe trips, Alex has
had many grizzly encounters but no
invasions of the food which is carefully
sealed and the bear alarm has yet to
be tested by a grizzly.
The bird life was terrific. We saw many birds
including the arctic swans at the left and the
loons below.
The most abundant wildlife was the mosquitoes. They
were there in great numbers as seen in this picture of
the inside of our tent vestibule (right). When the wind
blew strong, they almost totally disappeared.
Jackie and I kept well covered up and used deet
generously which caused Anne to declare us the King
and Queen of Deet.
We saw a lot of grizzly scat and bear tracks including this very fresh bear scat just in front of where we pitched our tent.
However, the only direct encounter with a grizzly was a brief sighting along the river (below right).
Coming around a river bend on our last day, we found a moose in the river. We spent a couple minutes getting closer
before he became aware of our presence and took off.
Sam Baker, they really
love you!
