Rialto Beach and Hole in the Wall A cancelled Klahhane Hike with Elston and Jackline Hill May 19, 2009
|
The Klahhanes had scheduled a hike at Rialto Beach to the Hole in the Wall for today because it was a very low tide day. This
beach is located on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula along the wettest part of the rain forest.. However, the weather
prediction was grim and the hike leaders were still relieving memories of slogging out of a wet and windy backpack a few weeks
ago, so the hike was cancelled. Having never been to the Hole in the Wall, we decided to go anyway as the brunt of the storm
was not supposed to hit until noon. To our delight, we had a spectacular hike with no rain whatsoever and we left before the
predicted winds arrived.
Below, the only hassle of the hike was crossing a creek. Fortunately, a log had been washed up across the creek by the waves.
Successfully crossing the creek, we headed on out the 1 1/2 mile hike to Hole in the Wall.
Before we knew it, we were at Hole in the Wall!
At normal tide levels, one can not make it through Hole in the Wall, so today was a special day.
Looking back from the other side of the hole.
It was a great first hike to Hole in the Wall. The main challenge besides crossing the creek was a sandy beach with few hard
spots. Coming back, the beach seemed firmer and the walking easier.
When we got back to the car, we sat on a log for lunch. Just as we finished eating, some drops started to fall.
What a great first hike to Hole in the Wall.
