The last three days on the river we traveled in kayaks. The first day in the kayaks we paddled 24
miles against strong wind, wave, and rain. Fortunately, there was a strong river current which made it
possible for us to reach our destination, a beach where we camped for the night. Below is a picture
of Jackie at the beach location.
The nice thing about that day's treatment was a hot springs at the end of the day. We went to the
other side of the river where there was a trail hacked out through the rain forest to a hot springs
where we soaked out the aches of the day. I am the second person from the right.
The picture below is a view across the river from the hot springs site to our campground.
For four nights on the river, we stayed at B&B's. The biggest challenge for me when entering Chilean
homes was to remember to lower my head as many of the doors were not adequate for a six foot tall
person like me.
In the picture below, Jackie is eating the dinner meal at our last B&B on the river. This was a native
dish which consisted of mussels, chicken, pork, sausage, potato, and fried bread.

At the end of the trip, we arrived at a very small town at the mouth of the river. From there we walked
across sand dunes to the Pacific Ocean so that we could say we had made it across Chile. On our
last morning, we walked from our place at the center of town to the airport which consisted of some
concrete bricks with holes in the center laid out for a runway with no buildings at the airport. There
were seven of us waiting for the plane, but the plane that showed up only had room for four people
and Jackie and I got elected to make the second trip which was nice as I got to fly in the co-pilots
seat with a terrific view of the Andes on our hour trip back to Puerto Varas.
