Klahhane Hike
Slab Camp to Duncan Flat
with Jim Kitrick
and a tribute to Betty Longshore, 90 years young
This is a pretty hike. The only negative is that it is a steep hike downward and then a hike back up!

Since Jackie is still making a comeback from surgery, we only went down to the bridge which is a 5.8 mile round trip with an
elevation gain of more than 1000 feet coming back. Most of the rest of the group of 20 went further, but I was pleased with our
destination because I wanted to try some new techniques with flowing water. Betty Longshore accompanied us to the bridge at
the Greywolf and her presence is always a delight.
As we neared the Greywolf we crossed a creek where I got my first opportunity to take pictures of the creek. Most of the
flowing water pictures were taken with a two second time exposure.
The bridge over the Graywolf washed out and for the longest time it was not possible to cross the bridge. However, a few years
ago it was replaced with a long bridge, quite a feat considering the remote location.
Betty turned 90 recently. I asked her to let me take her picture. "Only if you make me twenty years younger," she said. Not a
chance, I replied telling her that she naturally looks thirty years younger. No Photo Shop on this picture.
On the 5.8 miles hike, Jackie and Betty found over 50 different types of mushrooms. Below, Betty holds a chanterelle
mushroom.
I left Betty and Jackie to eat lunch by the river while I walked back along the river and up the trail to the creek..
Soon Jackie and Betty and Judy Boissivan came back up the trail. Below, Betty, truly ninety years young.
Judy Bossivan has been doing a marvelous job of recovery.
Eventually the mountain goats ran by.
Just another gloomy wet day on the Peninsula.
